30th March marked the International Day of Zero Waste, a global reminder that small changes can make a big impact - and every little action counts when it comes to protecting our beautiful Aotearoa. We all have a responsibility to care for New Zealand, protecting and preserving it for future generations. By making small changes, we can honour this responsibility and help keep our environment clean and green. Here are five simple and fun ways to cut down on waste in your daily life – and maybe even save some money along the way!

Ditch the Disposables – Go Reusable!

Our Whānau in NZ use millions of takeaway coffee cups (a price we pay for the best coffee!) and plastic bags every year – but you can easily break the cycle! Keep a reusable coffee cup, water bottle, and shopping bags with you. Many cafes even offer a discount for bringing your own cup – a win for you and the planet! Got a stash of plastic bags at home? Reuse them until they wear out, then switch to cloth bags or even a backpack for groceries.

Love Your Leftovers

Food waste is a big issue, with Kiwis throwing away over 150,000 tonnes of food each year. Save money and reduce waste by getting creative with leftovers. Tik Tok and Instagram reels can be a great inspiration! Turn last night’s roast veggies into a salad, freeze extra portions for busy days, or plan meals in advance to avoid overbuying. Composting scraps is another great way to reduce landfill waste – Auckland City Council provide green Food Scraps bins in most suburbs – put your food waste in these, not in your general refuse bin.

Shop Smart & Second-Hand

Fast fashion and unnecessary packaging create a mountain of waste. Instead of always buying new, check out op shops, second-hand marketplaces, and clothing swaps for unique finds that don’t cost the earth. Shopping in bulk stores and choosing products with less packaging also make a big difference!

Switch to Sustainable Swaps

Swap plastic wrap for beeswax wraps, disposable razors for a safety razor, and paper towels for washable cloths. Sustainable swaps often last longer, meaning you save money in the long run too!

Get Involved in Your Community

One of the best ways to make a difference is by getting involved! Join local clean-up events, swap items with friends instead of buying new, or follow zero-waste communities online for inspo. The more we work together, the bigger the impact we can make!

Going zero waste doesn’t mean being perfect – it’s about making small, sustainable changes that fit your lifestyle. Whether you start with just one or all five of these tips, you’ll be helping to keep New Zealand clean and green for future generations. Give it a go, get your whānau involved, and let’s make a difference together!
